LAKELAND, SC--(The Ohio Staterant) -- A study on the use of the drug Premarin in women with osteoporosis found that it increased bone density and inhibited bone resorption, while it did not appear to increase risk of fracture in women with a history of cardiovascular disease or osteoporosis. The study was conducted at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and was funded by the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"Although a few studies were conducted, there was not enough of a clinical effect to conclude that it was a strong or even statistically significant risk factor for fractures," Dr. James H. Leibowitz, assistant professor of gynecology and reproductive medicine, said in a statement. "Our findings suggest that it may be possible to reduce the risk of bone fractures by reducing the amount of estrogen circulating in the bloodstream, and that may improve bone health."
LAKELAND's Hormone Therapy Program is one of several that have been approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of women with osteoporosis. The program provides a range of hormone therapies, including Premarin, at no cost and for a maximum of six months.
Premarin is a hormone replacement therapy that was developed in the 1960s to help women with osteoporosis, or low-to-normal bone mass, reduce their risk of developing osteoporosis. It was originally intended for use in men but was discovered that women with osteoporosis were at an increased risk of developing bone fractures when the hormone replacement therapy was stopped.
Dr. Leibowitz said the study was conducted to determine the effects of Premarin on bone density and to explore its potential for the reduction of bone fractures in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
"This study provides evidence that Premarin is not an effective treatment for women with osteoporosis," Dr. Leibowitz said. "It is not a new drug and has not been studied for its potential benefits on bone density."
Leibowitz said the results of the study may be of interest for the medical community because the women who received the Premarin injection had increased bone density.
Premarin is currently under study at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine and is being evaluated for potential use in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Leibowitz said the use of Premarin may be considered for women with a history of cardiovascular disease or osteoporosis, or a risk factor for osteoporosis. Men with this condition are at an increased risk of fracture.
